Like many memes in this life, it all began with a suspicious tweet from Tom Holland. From then on, it was a free for all until the title of the third film in Holland’s Spider-man was revealed.

Yesterday, the trio at the centre of Sony’s Spider-Man franchise began relentlessly teasing fans about what the title of the third (and possibly final) title in Tom Holland’s Spider-man run. Zendaya, Tom Holland, and Jacob Batalon each posted a still from the upcoming film, but each posted a different title with the still.

Each of the teaser titles riffed on the trilogies ‘home’ motif. Zendaya posted Spider-Man: Home Slice. Batalon posted the title, Spider-Man: Home Wrecker. As for Holland? Spider-Man himself? He posted Spider-Man: Phone Home.

Fans immediate launched into meme mode, with many posting their own pun-tastic titles for the film. My personal favourite was one user, who even created a poster for Spider-Man: Work From Home.

Other fans followed Holland’s lead, memeing the title as famous lines and references to iconic films. One user tweeted their contribution, Spider-Man: Home Alone.

Of course, any MCU-related announcement, even one for teasing and trolling, is met with tin-foil-hat wearing level theories. Due to theories swirling around casting, many fans thought the multi-title promotional tease alluded to the multiverse.

“Hear me out,” a user wrote. “Home-Slice is referring to the pizza delivery Tobey McGuire Spider-Man. Home-Wrecker is referring to Andrew Garfield Spider-Man wrecking the lives of Gwen Stacy’s family. Phone-Home is referencing Tom Holland Spider-Man always calling Tony and Happy. BAM. Multiverse.”

Whatever the true meaning behind the teaser titles may be, the real title was revealed in a clip of Zendaya and Batalon roasting Holland for his habit of accidentally spoiling things in the MCU. The clip makes out that director, Jon Watts is telling them all different titles to prevent Holland from spoiling the title.

But, as they walk and talk, the trio passes a whiteboard that reveals the film’s true title. Spider-man: No Way Home will be in cinemas this Christmas.
