Deadline has reported that a dispute between Sony and Disney has ended their deal regarding the use of the character Spider-Man.

The end of this agreement would mean that Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney, won’t be involved in the Spider-Man films going forward, and Tom Holland’s iteration of the webslinger would no longer appear in the MCU.

According to Deadline‘s sources, the disagreement was instigated by Disney’s desire to change its agreement with Sony.

While the original Disney-Sony deal gave Disney five percent of the Spider-Man films’ gross box office revenue, sources said the company wanted to renegotiate that up to a 50/50 split. There was even some discussion that the deal might stretch to encompass other films in Sony’s Marvel Universe, such as Venom and the upcoming Morbius.

Sony predictably weren’t fans of the idea, particularly as Spider-Man: Far From Home is the studio’s highest-grossing film ever.

Even so, many Spidey fans pin the success of the latest Spider-Man films on the involvement of Marvel Studios. Prior to the Disney-Sony deal, Sony produced a series of Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire, before rebooting the character and casting Andrew Garfield as the wallcrawler.

Though the Garfield films were better received than the Maguire ones, the response to both was lukewarm at best when compared to Tom Holland’s widely lauded turn in the underoos. Attempting to recreate the Marvel magic without Marvel may be a tall order, considering Sony’s track record with the character thus far.

Fans are taking the news of Spidey’s potential exit from the MCU exactly how you’d expect, with many blaming Sony for the reported collapse of the deal.

Following Deadline‘s report, sources speaking to Variety and IGN have indicated that while negotiations are currently at an impasse, a deal isn’t completely off the table. Disney and Sony may yet come to an agreement, and continue to hold hands and frolic amongst their shared mounds of ticket sales. It’s also possible that all the publicity and fan pressure following the initial report will cause Sony to cave.

Hopefully, both companies can come to a mutually beneficial agreement that keeps Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU where he belongs. Considering the game-changing predicament we left our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man in at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it would be a great shame if he was suddenly snapped out of existence again.
