Yeah, Those PR Leaks Against Sophie Turner Were Exactly What We Thought They Were

I’m getting whiplash. A few days ago, I thought the biggest update in the divorce of Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas was her iconic dinner date with Taylor Swift. Now, Sophie is suing Joe to try and get her kids back to England.

The devil really is in the details here. Let’s get into it.

Sophie filed the lawsuit requesting the “the immediate return of children wrongfully removed or wrongfully retained” against Joe on September 21 in a Manhattan court, claiming that the “wrongful retention” began on the September 20. Which, as you may recall, was the date that this photo of Sophie and Taylor in New York made its impact.

Using the FBI-level deductive reasoning skills bestowed unto any girl with an internet connection and a motive, that means that Sophie and Joe probably met up to discuss the kids before she had her date with destiny, I mean, Taylor Swift. This, according to the lawsuit submitted by Sophie, was when Joe “refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother”.

But wait, why does Sophie want them back ‘home’ in England? Joe said that the kids were living in Miami and, of course, that he was taking care of them “pretty much all the time”, even while on tour.

According to the documents, the couple had apparently relocated the family to England back in April, supported by the fact that they listed their Miami  home in November 2022 and was sold earlier this year. The documents also say that “the children are fully involved and integrated in all aspects of daily and cultural life in England”, receive “routine medical and dental care in England”, and participate in “extracurricular activities, playdates, and cultural activities”.

So, when Joe left to tour with the Jonas Brothers at the end of July and Sophie was still filming her new series, which they both knew was going to happen, they agreed to have the kids stay with him. The logic was that he would have more free time during the day when the kids were awake, as opposed to Sophie’s busy days filming in England. The plan was Sophie to remain in the UK during filming from May, wrap production on September 14, travel to New York to get the kids, spend a week there, then go back home to the UK on the 20th, per reports.

But then the fight happened on August 15, the night after Sophie uploaded this cute dedication post supporting Joe on his tour. The documents say that “the breakdown of the parties’ marriage happened very suddenly”, and Joe officially filed for divorce on September 1.

The rest is history. We witnessed some transparent attempts to paint Sophie as an absent mother and “party girl” completely backfire. We got the “paparazzi” pics of Joe enjoying food with his kids, when the couple have famously kept their kids out of the public eye.

And you would think that after seeing overwhelming public support for the mother of your child — despite possibly some really subtle attempts to undermine it — you might want to consider your options and come to an agreement about the kids’ custody together. And unless this legendary fight on August 15 somehow affects where the kids should be living, the agreement should probably be prioritising the children and figuring out healthy way to co-parent moving forward.

Or, you know, you could refuse to hand over their passports and get served with a lawsuit. Can’t say I’m surprised that this is where we are, and how disappointing that is.
