If you’ve passed even an errant eye over social media over the last 12 month or so, then you will have caught sight of the oft-trending hasthag, #ReleaseTheSnyder Cut.

The hashtag is the work of a committed online fanbase of DC fans. That fanbase’s goal? To apply enough pressure to Warner Bros that they’ll release the original Zack Snyder assembly cut of Justice League.

Snyder was the director of that film, but a family tragedy meant he was not present for reshoots, which were handled by Joss Whedon. Whedon and Snyder’s cinematic tones are pretty different — the former is obsessed with one-liners, pop culture jokes, and bathetic asides. The latter, meanwhile, is Extremely Serious: his films are ripe with slow-motion, and violence, and grumbled monologues.

Hence, many think, the confused tone of the film, which was a critical and commercial disappointment on first release. According to many fans, the Snyder cut would restore the film to its original, grimmer vision, and smooth out those tonal inconsistencies.

Not everyone agreed. The #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement was met with backlash in some corners of the internet, with critics suggesting that fans were putting too much faith in an assembly cut of a fundamentally unfixable film.

Well, either way, looks like we’ll finally be able to judge for ourselves: the Snyder Cut is hitting HBO Max in 2021.

Snyder himself broke the news, announcing it in a live Q&A before following up with a simple and direct message posted to his socials. “It’s real,” he wrote.

It’s another big get for the streaming service. After all, but a few months ago, it was announced that HBO Max would also host the “Friends reunion” (quotation marks because it’ll actually be nothing but a filmed roundtable discussion.)

News on what HBO Max will be like in Australia has yet to appear.

Still. Today’s news is a very big deal indeed.
