It’s been six years between the release of the debut album from pop provocateur Sky Ferreira, Night Time Is My Time, and the breaking news that Ferreira is finally returning to the spotlight — for real this time.

In the grand scheme of things, six years is not a very long time. But in other, less pretentious and irritating schemes of things, six years is a fucking lifetime. Since the release of Night Time Is My Time, I personally have developed arthritis in my right knee, embarked on two separate longterm relationships, pursued and abandoned three careers, and started to go grey. The grand scheme of things can get fucked — six years is a long, long time to go without.

Now, in a new digital cover story with Pitchfork, Ferreira has accounted for that gap — kinda. She claims to have been struggling with issues of control that meant she couldn’t quite let go of the long-promised Night Time follow-up, Masochism. And, in fairness to her, she’s been busy with her acting career, taking a role in the third season of Twin Peaks and in the distinctly underrated Nicolas Cage thriller The Trust.

In the story, she promises that Masochism will very likely drop in 2019. Of course, she’s promised the record’s immanent release before — time after time after time. But we’re not just being offered words; Ferreira has also dropped a new single, the goth-infused ‘Downhill Lullaby’.

It’s the first taste of Masochism, much of which Ferreira claims she has already written. Indeed. if the Pitchfork story is to be trusted, the performer has her second record pretty much in the can, and has already recorded and mixed features with violinist Nils Gröndahl, and Ariel Pink collaborator Jorge Elbrecht.

Of course, you are more than welcome to take this with the biggest pinch of salt in the world. But hey, at least we’ve got something to go on this time.
