6 Signs It Might Be Time To Move Out Of Your Folks’ Home

Don't wait until your parents start dropping hints.

A safe and loving home with your parent/s should never be taken for granted. If you have a cushy bed and a full belly each night and are surrounded by people who love you, you are truly blessed!!

But even the most amazing family homes can make people go totally bananas. Ask anyone who did (or is currently doing) a full stint in iso with their folks.

There comes a time in a young person’s life when it’s in everyone’s best interests to get the hell out of there. Here are some of the warning signs that your time is nigh:

1. You Have No Idea How To Cook

Most people are at least a little coddled when they live at home. Maybe your mum does all the grocery shopping, and your dad loves to cook. It’s totally understandable if you don’t know the ins and outs of a full Sunday roast. But there comes a time when everyone should learn the basics.

Do you know how long to cook an egg? Could you whip together a basic pasta? Are you across the general rules of food safety? Living out of home will give you a crash course in all of this and more! It will also give you the opportunity to cook exactly what you want.

First stop: correctly reheating takeaway food. Next stop: MasterChef.

2. You Don’t Know How The Washing Machine Works

The same principle applies here. Learning how to do your own laundry is an important life skill! It’s incredibly sweet if your parents still insist on doing this for you, but you’ve gotta learn at some point. If you don’t get a handle on it early, you could end up with a lot of shrunken work clothes and pink T-shirts…

3. You Live Too Far Away From Uni/Mates

Unless your uni and/or work are right next to your old high school, there’s a good chance that your family home isn’t ideal for life after Year 12. A long commute can get tiring real quick and it can also make it way harder to expand your social circle.

Unfortunately, if you live in a major city, it can also be tricky to move out into a good location that’s actually cost effective. But you don’t have to settle for a dingy share house! If you’re thinking of making the move, check out Urbanest student accommodation.

They have slick rooms available in great inner-city locations in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane or Sydney. And, if you’re new to the area, they give you loads of opportunities to get to know people through a monthly calendar of free social events.

Plus, if you’re studying nursing, health science, education or research, you could be eligible for their Scholarship Beds program. This could get you a room from $20 per night in Sydney, $16 in Melbourne, $13 in Adelaide and $11 in Brisbane!

4. You Need Some More Privacy

There’s no getting around it. Your ~personal life~ will be 1000x better when you’re no longer under the watchful (though well-meaning) eye of your folks.

Once you move out, you won’t have to face a million questions whenever a new friend comes over to hang out. You won’t have to defend yourself when you lay in bed until midday. And, very importantly, you won’t have to cop weird looks from your dad when he accidentally catches you practicing the ‘WAP’ dance.

5. You’re Still On A Strict Curfew

If you are a legal adult who still has a parent-enforced bedtime, it’s time to get on outta there. Too much good stuff happens after dark, and you’re only young once!

Of course, you should still be kind to the people around you: your mates and/or fellow uni students also don’t want to be woken up at 4am every Sunday morning. But parties and events will be so much more fun when you don’t have to explain every single movement to your mum.

6. Even Your Parent/s Are Dropping Hints

This is the final straw. You do not want it to get to this point. If a parent sits you down and starts talking about their own need for *ahem* “privacy”, it’s time to start packing your bags.
