HBO has confirmed a ten-episode continuation of Sex & The City, albeit sans one of the show’s core characters, Samantha Jones, with actress Kim Cattrall having previously expressed no interest in revisiting the show.

While the limited series was reported as practically confirmed just a few weeks ago, the official announcement — and reveal of a teaser-trailer — has sent fans of the original show into a headspin, all over again.

As per Deadline, the show will return for ten half an hour episodes, under the new title of And Just Like That…, and will feature actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis returning to their roles. Michael Patrick King is returning as executive producer and has written several of the episodes, which will appear in the US on streaming service HBO Max. It joins the service’s recently announced True Blood and Gossip Girl reboots.

The three actresses posted a teaser trailer across their social media channels, which features atmospheric shots of S&TC‘s main character, New York, as well as the words “the story continues…”.

Given how central Samantha was to bringing the Sex to S&TC, fans are hesitant about the reboot, and wondering how the show will write her out.

While Cattrall stepped back from the proposed third S&TC film in 2017, citing dissatisfaction with her plot, it killed the film. And with Cattrall’s issues with the cast — having called out SJP and co.’s ‘bullying’ — it was pretty much assumed the show couldn’t go ahead without her. Now, that’s obviously not the case.

Skeptics are unsure what the show could be without Jones, by far the most sexually adventurous and liberated of the core four. Despite being a sex columnist, Carrie Bradshaw was remarkably prudish at times — with Jones out of the picture, she’ll need a new friend to mine content from.

Without any information on where Jones is, fans are speculating that the show will kill both her and potentially Carrie’s love interest Mr. Big (Chris Noth), as the latter was dead in the now-discarded S&TC 3 script.

When New York Times writer and novelist Taffy Brodesser-Akner asked her followers to suggest a plotline to explain Samantha’s absence, Parker herself responded with two tweets: “pen and paper ready, x”, and the slightly more confusing “Exceeding all expectations. I am summoning discipline though desperate to suggest ‘hot/cold'”.

While our top minds attempt to decode SJP’s tweet and unlock the secrets of the reboot, we have memes and jokes to sate us. Find some of our favourites below.
