Seven easy ways to keep up to date with current events
As the semester get busier and the assignments pile up, it can be easy to lose track of what’s going on in the world around you. If you’re spending all your time studying hard and burying your head in textbooks, it can often leave you feeling clueless about current affairs.
But keeping up to date with the wider world doesn’t need to be difficult. Here are a few easy ways to fit a daily dose of worldly updates into your busy schedule.
Get a twitter account
Twitter is a great platform to find out breaking news and stories that are trending for the day. If you follow news organisations and famous personalities you will have the information available at your fingertips. You can even shift the notifications so that if multiple news channels retweet a singular photo, or hashtag the same thing it will send you a buzz. Too easy!
Follow news organisations on Facebook
The greatest thing about this is that if you simply follow 3 to 4 news pages, you will hardly notice a difference to your newsfeed.
News organisations usually use their Facebook pages to give you short and punchy news in the caption or headline, so it’s a great way to receive the news without even needing to open the link.
Use the news app on your iPhone
Sorry android users, this one’s just for the Apple club. The iPhone news app is an awesome source of quick info, as it personalises the news for you based on what you read and the organisations you read the most.
The app provides you with a smorgasbord of info, including international and sport news so you will found out everything you need to know in one place.
Check out your university newsroom
There is a huge chance that your university will have an online newsroom, which tells you all the amazing things that is going on in your uni. You can usually follow them on Facebook and Twitter, or simply go to your university website.
The newsrooms usually report on exemplar students or research studies at your uni. It’s great for uni discussion, for networking and to discuss in interviews so make sure to keep up to date!
Put the radio on whilst you do menial tasks
Radio may seem like a bit of an outdated way to get your worldly info, but it takes zero effort to consume. Chuck on a news radio station whilst you’re cleaning, cooking or studying to have on in the background. You will be keeping up to date without even realising it. You can also listen to an FM channel to receive news around the clock if you would rather divide up your news intake.
Read your university paper
Uni papers or mags are a great source of info, and it’s free! University students produce it, so chances are you you’ll be interested in the kind of topics they cover. You’ll also be supporting your fellow aspiring students, which is a bonus.
While it may not contain the most breaking news, it will feature a lot of cool features and insights into university life around campus. They will usually be sitting in buildings around campus, so grab one for your commute home.
Have a chat about current affairs with your mates
Talking current affairs with your friend is always super fun, especially if you have friends who are equally passionate.
On your lunch break, bring up a (not too political) discussion about what’s happening in the world. Chances are you’ll learn a heap about the topic from just being in a group discussion, and you’ll look pretty intellectual to those around you.
