A Seaside Town Is Fighting For Their Postie To Be Allowed To Decorate His Postie Bike
He likes to dress up for Christmas and Easter.
Australians are passionate about very specific things. The exact right temperature of beer, the correct way to refer to potato cakes. And, it turns out, the freedom of their local postman to dress up his vehicle in holiday-themed decorations. Cool!
Right now in the Victoria seaside town of Torquay, residents are fighting for their postie, Cam McFarlane’s, right to dress up his postman motorbike in Christmas decorations. Apparently this has been Cam’s tradition for years, but recently Australia Post ordered Cam to remove the decorations citing safety concerns.
Safe to say, this is not sitting well with the people of Torquay. A private Facebook group has been set up called “Cam the Postie brings so much more than just the mail!!!” where people are sharing their Cam anecdotes and pictures. Locals are not very happy that Australia Post is interfering with Cam’s ability to stick some stuffed reindeers on a motorbike and frankly, I can see why.
“Mail delivery was drab n boring today. Cam’s smile was missing,” said one resident. “No decorations. Australia Post you have shot yourselves in the foot big time. Postie Cam is the loveliest happiest most positive man I have ever met in my life time. Bring back the decorated Postie sleigh.”
Another wrote: “I recall our first Christmas in Torquay 6 years ago, of our encounter with Cam and his magnificent dressed up bike. It is clear that since then and it could be longer than 6 years that no one in Australia Post has had an issue, given that nearly the whole of Torquay has known of Cam and his Christmas tradition, is therefore hard for Australia Post to say they knew nothing of this, therefore by Cam’s actions that implied consent had been given, so how can they now retract this???”
Australia Post have been copping it on Facebook all day, but it doesn’t look like they’re responding much.
The ABC obtained comment from Australia Post, who claim that while they “love it when our people share the Christmas spirit” that “safe work practices” are the priority. “We’re very happy for Cam to apply some decorations as long as they don’t obstruct his visions, pose any risk of becoming tangled in his wheels or compromise the handling of the bike,” they said.
Is this a win for Cam? Is it a win for Torquay? We’ll have to stay tuned.
