Scott Pilgrim Author Bryan Lee O’Malley Has A New Book Coming Out
It’s called Seconds, and it’s about a “loveable spaz” named Katie.
Autobots, roll out! It’s clobberin’ time! Insert the pop culture catchphrase of your choice here! Why all the excitement? Scott Pilgrim author Brian Lee O’Malley has just announced an all new comic, due for release next year.
Entitled Seconds, the new book is O’Malley’s follow-up to his beloved series. Early word is that it takes place in a similar magical realist young adult world, although this time around, the protagonist is a “loveable spaz” named Katie, who spends her time hanging out in a small-town restaurant.
In a recent interview where he discussed the book, O’Malley said that Seconds is partly inspired by the time he spent working in a restaurant in Toronto. It features characters similar to those in Scott Pilgrim, and an art style that draws on the big hair and cute figures of ‘70s and ‘80s manga.
As for the story, O’Malley only spoke vaguely, saying that it takes place “in a town that is like a kinder, gentler fairy tale version of reality”, before the narrative veers off into a direction that is “very strange, very mental.”
He also addressed the box office fiasco that was Edgar Wright’s film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim. “There’s been a few movies this year that bombed in a much more spectacular way than ours,” he said, “so I feel like the stench is kinda dissipating.”
Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Seconds comes out from Random House in July 2014. Or you can just wait and be slightly disappointed by the inevitable movie adaptation that comes two or three years later.
