Scott Morrison has been questioned over a detour to visit the final resting place of his distant ancestors in Cornwall, during the middle of an international travel ban.

The Prime Minister, who was in South West England for the G7 summit last week, made a side trip to the small village of St Keverne on Sunday.

He’s been accused of playing tourist while Australians aren’t allowed to do the same. Alongside the cemetery, he’s also stopped off at an English jail, church, and multiple pubs, The Guardian reported.

Morrison tried to find his sixth-great grandparents, John and Jane Roberts. A member of the local historic society showed ScoMo around the gravesite but couldn’t locate them, so he ended up laying flowers on the headstone of another, further removed relative.

The convict William Roberts, who brought the Prime Minister’s lineage over to Australia as part of the First Fleet, was also born in Cornwall’s St Keverne.

His family history tour wasn’t disclosed to the media but is thought to have been planned for at least a fortnight.

He told 2GB’s Ben Fordham that the trip was “on the way”, and not a ‘double standard’. “I think it was pretty innocent and I think that’s massively overstating it,” the Prime Minister said.

Tourism Minister Dan Tehan told Sunrise last week that there’s “still a long way to go” before a travel bubble is created between the UK and Australia.

The overseas travel ban in Australia has been in place since March 23, with travellers needing an exemption from the Department of Home Affairs to go there.
