Between our dangerous spiders, venomous snakes and deadly crocs, there isn’t much an Australian fears in life anymore.

But there is one animal that has the power to bring any Aussie to their knees. One animal so evil that both young and old fear walking outside in springtime. An animal that knows its power and isn’t afraid to use it. It is, of course, the vicious magpie.

For nine months out of the year, the magpie is just like any other annoying bird that tries to pick at your food and caws far too loudly in the mornings. But between August to October, magpies enter their breeding season, which is what Aussies fatefully know to be Swooping Season.

Highly protective of their young, it’s near impossible to walk outside in spring without locking eyes with a magpie that’s out for blood. And sadly for a very small child from Lake Illawarra, he had to find this out the hard way.

Decked out in a lime green shirt (bad choice) and helmet (good choice), the small kid tries to scooter away in a failed attempt to evade the attack from the magpie viciously swooping at him.

Captured by Wayne Sherwood and uploaded by Aussie meme account, Brown Cardigan, the video quickly went viral for just how horrifyingly relatable the whole debacle was.

While the clip is only 20-seconds long, the child’s shrieking as he crouches down to try and avoid the angry bird really does perfectly sum up what 2020 has felt like. However all Aussies know that the pure fear in the child’s voice is sadly just something Australians have to face at least once in their lives. It’s called character building.

But for those concerned about the child who was attacked by the Lake Illawarra magpie, he is Sherwood’s son and is fine. He also eventually got over his fear of magpies after riding alongside his dad a couple more times and just facing the bird head on. Literally.
