In a press conference this morning, Prime Minister Scott Morrison refused to criticise Donald Trump’s efforts to stop all votes from being counted in the US election.

“I’m not a participant in the US political process. I’m a partner… we respect the decisions that the American people make in their democracy.”

Morrison called the US a “great democracy” with “great institutions”, saying Australia and the US are “like-minded and like in so many ways”.

People are divided in their opinions, with some calling the comments a cop-out, while others say it is the diplomatic thing to do.

Most foreign state leaders have so far refrained from commenting on the ongoing US election, which is unlikely to have final results for many days to come. This tends to be standard practice as governments must work with whoever gets elected, and commenting on the inner workings of states opens yourself up for criticism too.

Joe Hockey — current Australian ambassador to the US, and former Treasurer who you might remember from this infamous image where he’s smoking a cigar in the parliamentary gardens before delivering a budget which was insanely bad for young people — on the other hand, has gone full steam ahead with furthering lies and misinformation related to the US election.

In an interview with 2GB radio, Hockey claimed that electoral fraud had “for sure” occurred in the US because “in Washington DC, 93 per cent of the city voted for Joe Biden … I find it hard to believe.”

People were quick to point out that Democrats regularly receive votes in the 90%’s in DC. In 2016, Hillary Clinton received 91% of the votes, and Barack Obama got 91% and 92% in 2012 and 2008 respectively.

When asked about Hockey’s statements, Morrison refused to comment on the matter.
