These days, if you’re not setting your stories in an expanded universe, you might as well just go home and die. It’s the MCU, the DCU, even the Paddington expanded universe — and now joining this trend is Netflix’s Road Dahl Extended Universe.

Netflix announced today that they will be reimagining and extending some of Roald Dahl’s most beloved stories, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits and a whole bunch more, in what’s being described as a “first-of-its-kind slate of premium animated event series” which is aimed at audiences of all ages.

Which is cool, because it’s sometimes easy to forget that Roald Dahl novels are all deeply cooked. Remember The Witches? Woah. Extremely fucked up.

“Our mission, which is purposefully lofty, is for as many children as possible around the world to experience the unique magic and positive message of Roald Dahl’s stories,” said Roald Dahl’s widow, Felicity Dahl, in the statement released by Netflix.

“This partnership with Netflix marks a significant move toward making that possible and is an incredibly exciting new chapter for the Roald Dahl Story Company. Roald would, I know, be thrilled.”

The list of titles that we could see include Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryMatildaThe BFGThe TwitsCharlie and the Great Glass ElevatorGeorge’s Marvellous MedicineBoy – Tales of Childhood,Going SoloThe Enormous CrocodileThe Giraffe and the Pelly and MeHenry SugarBilly and the MinpinsThe Magic FingerEsio TrotDirty Beasts, and Rhyme Stew.

There are some deep dives there, but I love it. George’s Marvellous Medicine is a weird one, it’s basically about a boy who poisons his grandmother until she disappears — wholesome! Looking forward to that adaptation.

Production is set to commence on the first of the Netflix Dahl animated series in 2019.
