Has the unsatisfying finale of your favourite podcast left a gaping hole in your audio schedule? The guys who founded reddit are trying their hand at creating original, regular content in the form of a weekly podcast called Upvoted — and they’ve just uploaded their first episode.

According to reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, the podcast will attempt to “dig a little deeper, and hopefully realise that we’re all more connected than we thought.” A blog post accompanying the first episode explains the format: “When a compelling story pops up, we’ll follow up with the people involved to see if they’d like to share what happened after all the internet fame, or the life-changing comment, or even the simple kind gesture from an internet stranger. There’s no shortage of content and we’ve been thrilled with how excited everyone has been to contribute.”

The first episode focuses on redditor Dante Orpilla – frontman of an up-and-coming band, who kicked a drug addiction, lost his son – “I was spending my Father’s Day putting up missing child posters for him” – and was set-up by a former friend turned informant. He was on house arrest facing ten years in federal prison when he first posted on Reddit, asking for other users to ask him anything.

From the debut episode, it’s clear that Upvoted is trying to play to their strengths, focusing on the most interesting people who are a part of the reddit community. And while there are a few too many ads, and the slight feeling that the whole thing is a 35-minute tribute to reddit, it’s an interesting listen; not spoiling anything, but I didn’t expect the story to lead where it did. Think This American Life – which they admit was an inspiration for the podcast – but telling the stories of people who say that reddit changed their lives.

A new episode will be released every Thursday, and there’s an endless supply of fascinating stories to unearth, so it’ll be interesting to see what this becomes.
