Red Dead Redemption 2, a game in which you learn about the inescapable corruption of man, features many fun and interesting ways to die. You can be shot. You can be trampled by a horse and carriage. You can fall off a cliff. You can be mauled by a pack of wolves. You can be beaten to death, or set on fire, or run over by a train. And you can also, as it turns out, be struck down by a bolt of lightning.

In a video posted to YouTube by Sno, player character Arthur Morgan is doing a few chores around camp, just minding his own business, when the wrathful hand of God descends from up on high to snatch his immortal soul from its temporary flesh housing.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a dynamic weather system, meaning it is unscripted. The sun shines, the clouds roll in, and bolts of electricity find the quickest route to the ground through unsuspecting outlaws’ heads without any event being specifically planned by the game’s programmers. As in real life, weather happens, and you just have to deal with it.

The game encourages you to change into more appropriate clothes according to the temperature, lest your health suffer. However, the gradual impact of wearing a light cotton shirt in the snow isn’t terribly drastic, and I am unaware of any outfit that would insulate you from one billion volts to the face. I personally have never bothered to change my clothes, and am still wearing the exact same thing I was at the start of the game. I have also never taken a bath, but that’s because the one time I tried to check into a hotel I accidentally shot the clerk.

Despite my sinning ways, I haven’t yet been struck by lightning, nor does it appear anybody other than Sno has suffered the adverse judgement of the heavens. A few have received stern warnings, though.

Their death by random, freak weather accident may feel a bit unfair, but life isn’t fair, and often neither are video games.
