Even Prince Charles Reckons Scott Morrison Needs To Attend The UN’s Climate Conference
Scott Morrison still hasn't RSVP'd for the conference.
Even Prince Charles reckons Prime Minister Scott Morrison needs to show his face at the COP26 climate change conference next month if Australia wants to be taken seriously on the world stage.
In an interview with the BBC‘s climate editor Justin Rowlatt, Charles was asked about Australia’s climate (in)action, and his thoughts on Scott Morrison still sitting on the fence about his attendance at COP26.
“Is that what he says?” Charles asked.
For those unfamiliar with the royal family outside of what we’ve seen on The Crown, Charles is a noted environmentalist and has been campaigning for climate action for years. Heck, he even has a car that quite literally runs on wine and cheese.
Rowlatt then went on to explain that Morrison is worried about spending too much time in quarantine if he attends the event, before asking Charles why he thinks world leaders should make the effort to attend the event.
“Well, that’s what I am trying to say all the time and the point being that this is a last chance saloon, literally,” Charles said. “Because if we don’t really take the decisions which are vital now it’s going to be almost impossible to catch up.”
Charles then went on to stress that it will be a “disaster” if the world doesn’t start taking immediate climate action. “It’ll be catastrophic,” he said. “It is already beginning to be catastrophic because nothing in nature can survive the stress that is created by these extremes of weather.”
It’s rare that I agree with Prince Charles, but the man’s got a point this time. You truly hate to see it.
The comments come after weeks of speculation as to who, exactly, will be representing Australia at COP26. Foreign Minister Marise Payne has stressed that Australia will be represented at the event, but specifics as to who will represent us is yet to be decided. “It is not a no-show at the conference,” she said in a press conference last month. “Australia will be strongly represented at the conference no matter by which senior representative and our commitment is very clear.”
But let’s be real here, if we don’t send Scott Morrison, we’re sending the wrong message about Australia’s climate action policy.
