Over the past few days, it was announced that the legen – wait for it – dary Neil Patrick Harris will be playing the nefarious Count Olaf in Netflix’s adaptation of the wildly popular book series, A Series of Unfortunate Events. This follows the 2004 feature film adaptation of the first three books in the series, where Jim Carrey played the villainous count. The film flopped in a big way, but there are tremendously high hopes for Netflix to come through with the goods. And we’ve got some actors in mind that we’d love to see playing our favourite characters.

Violet Baudelaire – Hailee Steinfeld

When she’s not busy being a part of the Swifty squad or singing about how she can scream her own name, Hailee Steinfeld is an incredibly esteemed young actress. Besides starring in the Pitch Perfect series, Steinfeld’s claim to fame is her mesmerising appearance in 2010’s True Grit, for which she was nominated for almost an entire Wikipedia page’s worth of awards. Her fair skin and husky voice seem a perfect match for Violet, the eldest Baudelaire child who has an insatiable knack for inventing.

Klaus Baudelaire – Isaac Hempstead Wright

As if Bran Stark wouldn’t make the best bookworm this side of Lake Lachrymose. He’s got the looks down, and that’s not to mention that it wouldn’t be hard for him to bring some of that standard Bran Stark caution and worry to Klaus, a naturally timid character.

Sunny Baudelaire – a baby

All that needs to be said, really.

Aunt Josephine – Viola Davis

Don’t get me wrong; Meryl Streep was sensational in the film version of A Series of Unfortunate Events. However, in an effort to give the series a bit more substance and make it more than a comedy, we should change it up to Viola Davis of How to Get Away with Murder fame. She’s sharp and to the point, but would also very easily nail the insanity and desperation of the beloved Aunt Josephine.

Uncle Monty – Jeff Bridges

He’s likable, he’s friendly, and he has an incredibly cheery disposition as the older father figure the Baudelaire orphans so desperately yearned for. All qualities Uncle Monty possesses, and all qualities Jeff Bridges has the ability to bring to the screen.

Georgina Orwell – Lucy Liu

The ultimate double agent, Dr. Georgina Orwell may be one of the coolest and most mysterious characters in the series.  An optometrist who follows the giant eye motif carried throughout all 13 books, her underhandedness and ability to play both sides of the fence needs an actress who has the stoicism and level-headedness to match. And who better to do that than Lucy Liu?

Esmé Squalor – Taraji P. Henson

To play the role of Esmé Squalor, a character who becomes Count Olaf’s love interest and equally evil accomplice mid-way through the series, is a tough ask. She has to be cunning yet completely superficial, malicious yet a little stupid, and often irrational. With Taraji P. Henson’s experience playing Cookie on Empire, she could bring some of those qualities to A Series of Unfortunate Events and put a deliciously evil spin on the role.

Jerome Squalor – Bradley Cooper

Jerome is 100 per cent the exact opposite to Esmé. Funnily enough, Bradley Cooper is the exact opposite to Taraji P. Henson. That worked out well.

Jackson Langford

Jackson is studying a Bachelor of Communication degree at the University of Newcastle and is the rightful heir to the throne.
