Nakkiah Lui makes sure Landback has never looked more chaotic in the first trailer for her new comedy series Preppers.

The six-part series sees a young Aboriginal TV presenter, Charlie (Nakkiah Lui), returning to her Nan’s land to find it occupied by doomsday preppers. But it turns out Charlie is running from the end of the world of sorts too.

The series is written by Lui and her husband, Gabriel Dowrick, and directed by Steven McGregor (Black Comedy). Starring Lui herself, the deadly cast also includes Uncle Jack Charles, Meyne Wyatt (who you might remember from his spine-chilling monologue on Q&A earlier this year), and Aaron McGrath make up the prepping community of Eden 2. Mr Family Feud himself, Grant Denyer, also sends himself up as Charlie’s producer, slimy boss, and fiancé.

The series also guest stars Luke Arnold as their dejected yuppie leader, alongside Leeanna Walsman, Yael Stone (Orange Is The New Black), Toby Schmitz (Black Sails) and Sofia Nolan.

The comedy appears to be all about the odd form optimism takes in the face of various apocalypses, something First Nations folks know a little about. Of the series, Lui and Dowrick teased that they, “look forward to people connecting with our unique take on the subculture of prepping: the unexpected hope and community people create when preparing for the apocalypse.”

Dealing with themes and issues of self-determination, landback, coming back from being cancelled, and unravelling family secrets, Preppers looks a treat. If you’re like me and cannot wait to sink your teeth into Preppers, the end is nigh. Stream the series from Wednesday 10 November 9.10pm on ABC iView and ABC TV.
