Don’t Panic, But It Sure Looks Like Powderfinger Are Teasing A Comeback
The band have made some moves on social media recently, and fans are going wild.
It’s been a matter of days since the ten year anniversary of the breakup of Powderfinger, one of Australia’s best-loved bands.
It was April 2010 when lead singer of Powderfinger Bernard Fanning took to the band’s official website to post the news. “We feel that we have said all that we want to say as a musical group,” Fanning said of their latest album, Golden Rule. “We can’t think of a better way to farewell our fans than with music that we all believe in and also with, hopefully, our best tour to date.”
A matter of months later, on November 13 that year, the group stayed true to their word. They took to the stage at Brisbane’s River Stage, played ‘These Days’ as their encore, and then walked off, into the sunset.
And unlike some other groups or musicians we could mention — we’re looking at you, John Farnham — they didn’t backslide on their breakup, either. Fanning released a couple of solo records, and journalist Dino Scatena published Footprints, a glowing appraisal of their time together as musicians. But that was it. Otherwise: silence.
Until now. Last night, the band posted an update link to their Facebook page, encouraging fans to sign up for forthcoming news. Even more excitingly, they changed over their cover image on Facebook to a shot from that final farewell tour.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, they also updated their profile picture too, swapping their old snap for a throwback photo of the band in their early days.
Which leads us to the other big milestone — this September will mark 20 years since the group released Odyssey Number Five, one of their best known records.
Could we see a string of Powderfinger shows this November, a double-whammy celebration of the album that made their name and a gift to fans after exactly ten years away? Or, given we’re living in the time of a pandemic, a live-streamed show?
We’re not sure, but it’s clear something is in the works. Music Junkee has reached out to the band’s record label for comment.
