Please Enjoy This Guy Taking The Piss Out Of Pretentious ‘Pitchfork’ Reviews
10/10 Best New Reviewer.
Pitchfork reviews are generally considered the gold standard of music criticism these days — long, elegant, and illuminating pieces that read more like a piece of creative writing than your run-of-the-mill music journalism. (Sometimes they also just upload a video of a monkey peeing in its own mouth, but that’s a Jet special).
They’re also, arguably, the only reviews that are hotly anticipated and endlessly debated these days — numerous articles have been written about the mysterious rating system, and just what constitutes a perfect 10/10 rating.
But yes, sure, there are times when Pitchfork reviewers are overcome with fits of verbosity and get entirely lost in the thesaurus, resulting in the kind of articles that would get torn apart on RipFork — a website which was dedicated to taking apart the more ridiculous of reviews. RipFork has been silent since 2017, so it was only a matter of time until someone stepped up to take up the mantle of roasting P4K.
Connor Brandt, the frontman of US outfit The Real Zebos, just entered the fray — uploading a couple of videos taking the piss out of two recent reviews, Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon III: The Chosen, and The Strokes’ The New Abnormal. There’s no particular genius to it — Brandt simply dons an all-black outfit and some glasses to denote the snooty review — but he doesn’t need to add much at all, Pitchfork does it all for him.
