"Piers Morgan should be made to enter Wimbledon next year so we can all see how long he lasts."

18-year-old British tennis player Emma Raducanu has been the latest to cop criticism from conservative commentator Piers Morgan, who tweeted that she “couldn’t handle the pressure” after bowing out of  the fourth-round of her Wimbledon match following the advice of her medical team.

She was facing Australia’s world No 75 Ajla Tomljanovic, 75 minutes into in the last-16 when she started to experience breathing difficulties. She can be seen in vision clutching her diaphragm.

Raducanu had only recently finished her school exams and is currently ranked 338th in the world.

She was facing Australia’s world No 75 Ajla Tomljanovic, 75 minutes into in the last-16 when she started to experience breathing difficulties. She can be seen in vision clutching her diaphragm.

In an interview with BBC Sport’s Sue Barker, she explains that she followed the advice of her medical team.

“I found it very difficult to regulate my breathing,” she said.

“I really, really wanted to be able to compete and try my best. But the medical advice was pull out. And yeah, I followed it because I think that their advice was the best in the end.”

The BBC commentator and three-time Wimbledon champion, John McEnroe, suggested the last 16 “got a little too much”.

“I feel bad for Emma, obviously,” McEnroe said.

“It appears it just got a little bit too much, as is understandable, particularly with what we’ve been talking about this over the last six weeks with Osaka not even here.”

Then, enter Mr Morgan, who tweeted that Raducanu was a “talented player but couldn’t handle the pressure & quit when she was losing badly.”

He also suggested she invite her fans to stop criticising McEnroe and seek his advice on “how to toughen up”.

Yes, great life advice, thanks Dr Piers.

But Twitter has come in to defend Raducanu, reminding him he has not been great at handling pressure himself.

Remember when Morgan criticised Meghan Markle’s discussion of her mental health struggles, and ultimately stormed out of the Good Morning Britain for being pulled into line? So does the internet.

This all follows on from Morgan’s last take on Naomi Osaka, saying she needed to”get over yourself” when Osaka stated she would not be doing press at the French Open because of the pressure it put on her mental health. And he named her “the world sport’s most petulant little madam”.

Big name players have come out in support of young Raducanu.

Andy Murray, another former Wimbledon champion, dismissed the accusation that she couldn’t handle the pressure.

And Murray’s very own mother, Judy Murray, a former Great Britain Fed Cup team captain, tisked that “middle-aged men should generally avoid commenting on the physical or mental well-being of teenage girls.”
