Great Day For Sad People: Phoebe Bridgers Covered A Bo Burnham Song Live In Concert
Two masters of malaise unite.
Phoebe Bridgers is one of our foremost chroniclers of existential angst, a musician who is never afraid to delve into the ugly, the complex, the painful.
Over the course of two extraordinary albums, Bridgers has crafted an entire miniature universe, one that blends sorrow with hope. Hers is a voice that speaks authoritatively and sensitively to the feelings of being ignored by the world, of wanting more.
Bo Burnham, the famous YouTuber, Vine star, comedian and filmmaker, mines similar territory. Though he masks his devastation in punchlines, he too has a firm grasp on the ways that one can become overwhelmed by the minutiae of day-to-day life. His film Eighth Grade was an expertly handled look at precisely that deluge, following a young woman (Elsie Fisher) as she tries to navigate the complex hierarchies of high school, all while trying to stay authentic to her vision.
And that’s not even to mention his new Netflix special, Inside, which made great art out of suffering. A chronicle of loneliness, desperation and the quest for purpose, it steered away from easy jokes in favour of often caustic examinations of a content-saturated world that still somehow feels boring and alienating.
So yes, it was only a matter of time before the two artists were going to converge. And they have, spectacularly, at a Phoebe Bridgers gig, with the musician covering the Burnham song ‘That Funny Feeling.’
With her trademark stiletto knife vocals, Bridgers leans into the devastation of the song, crafting melodies that swirl around her head like smoke.
Basically, it’s a good day for sad people.
