Australia had never taken home a medal in men’s Olympic basketball, until last week. For the first time since we started competing in the sport in 1956, the Boomers ended up on the podium with a glorious bronze medal.

The Boomers won against Slovenia 107-93 over the weekend, with Patty Mills scoring 42 points to lead the team to the bronze. Across the six games of the Tokyo Olympics, Mills scored an average of 23.3 points per game — not too shabby at all.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and you know, it’s taken a lot of experiences, a lot of ups and a lot of downs,” Patty Mills told a Channel 7 reporter just after the win. “It’s our culture at the end of the day, it’s our Australian culture, our Aussie spirit. It’s time to bring an Olympic medal home back to our country Australia so we I can hang it up at mum and dad’s house.”

Clearly, it’s a victory worth celebrating — and oh, did they celebrate. Footage of the team raging to Men At Work’s classic ‘Land Down Under’ has roared across social media, and contains more serotonin than most of us have felt in 18 months.
