Last month, the Academy announced that the 2022 Oscars would feature a Fan Favourite award for the first time in history.

In collaboration with Twitter, film fans can now vote for their favourite film of 2021 by visiting this site or tweeting their favourite film’s title with the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite.

Also for the first time, there is going to be a #OscarsCheerMoment award for a “movie theatre moment that made you stand up and cheer”. Fans are able to vote up to 20 times a day for both awards until March 3.

Many believe the introduction of these awards is part of the Academy’s bid to stay relevant. Ratings for the Oscars were declining even pre-COVID and fan outrage at the Academy’s poo-pooing of the much-loved Marvel franchise hasn’t helped with win favour with younger audiences. And so, the Fan Favourite category was born.

But as quickly as it arrived, so has the reality of Stan Twitter. According to Deadline, Amazon Prime’s Cinderella starring Camila Cabello is currently in the lead for the Favourite Film category. Yes, the film that James Corden promoted by humping a car while dressed as a mouse is currently tipped to win at the Oscars.

It’s a big upset for Spider-Man: No Way Home fans, who some believe the category was created to appease.

The Zack Snyder’s Justice League has also received a high number of votes. However, it’s technically ineligible because it’s a recut of a 2017 film.

The Oscars will air in the US on March 27, AKA the day when Camilla Cabello stans will learn whether or not their gambit has paid off.
