Oscar Isaac Really, Really Wanted Finn And Poe To Be Lovers In ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’

Apparently the "Disney overlords" weren't having any of it.

Being released from a contract is one helluva cause for celebration. Don’t believe me? Just ask Oscar Isaac, who has spent his Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker press tour repeatedly and enthusiastically railing against the honchos who stopped Finn and Poe from being lovers.

Isaac, of course, plays the dashing Poe Dameron, a quasi-Han Solo character who’s probably the best pilot in the galaxy. He’s also definitely in love with Finn, played by John Boyega — from their very first meeting it was clear that the two had a sexual chemistry that went above and beyond just a simple bromance.

So, at least for Isaac, it was obvious that the pair should end up being lovers. Hell to Finn’s rushed and inconsequential crush on Rey (Daisy Ridley): Finnpoe all the way.

Only, Disney didn’t see it that way, as Isaac himself has revealed on his press tour. Turns out the head honchos at that company weren’t ready for true queer representation beyond a background kiss between two women (something edited out of the film in Singapore and the UAE) — and Oscar Isaac is pissed.

Hence, for the last few months, ole Oscar has taken every available opportunity to tell the press that, if it was up to him, The Rise of Skywalker would have ended with Finn and Poe rushing up to each other and spending their lives in one another’s arms.

In an interview with Variety, for instance, Isaac says, “I kind of hoped and wished that maybe [that relationship] would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control. It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what.

“They’ve always had a quite loving and open relationship in which it wouldn’t be too weird if it went beyond it.”

Then there’s this video interview, in which Isaac pins the blame for the romance being shot down on “Disney overlords.”

“There could have been a very interesting, current-thinking love story here,” Isaac said.

If there’s any silver lining to this thoroughly unappealing cloud, it’s that we’ve got a bunch of memes out of it, with Twitter users imagining Isaac waging all-out war on Disney.

Long live Oscar Issac, is what I’m saying.
