The First Proper Season 5 ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Trailer Is Full Of Revolution
This looks intense.
Last month Netflix released the first minute of the latest season of Orange Is The New Black. With Daya facing off against that douchebag guard with a gun it was all very tense. Everyone’s screaming. The camera is swirling. Then there’s a gunshot.
But this footage was also 99 percent the same as what we saw at the end of the last season. Now, perhaps egged on by a now-infamous hack which has led to certain people seeing an awful lot of the season ahead of time, Netflix have dropped a full trailer with loads of meat.
Now that the women of Litchfield are more united than before (no spoilers, but some highly upsetting shit went down), they’re making a determined stand against the institutionalised abuse they’ve experienced at the prison. Red is sleuthing for incriminating documents, Alison is writing an open letter, Flaca and Ramos are posing for the press, and Piper seems to only be around for about two seconds! Looks pretty good imo.
Orange Is The New Black was especially political last season. With the Litchfield guards drawing direct comparison to an increasingly militarised US police force, the plight of the inmates became frequently symbolic of wider struggles and systems of oppression in society. It’ll be interesting — if not a little discomforting — to see how far the show continues down that path this time around. A show about women (especially trans women) deprived of their rights in an institution teeming with neo-Nazis and run by men who seem to have no repercussions for abusive behaviour feels like a particularly heavy watch these days.
