I’m not quite sure how it happened but I’ve found myself on NunTok. Yes, NunTok is a real thing filled with videos of nuns doing what nuns do best — serving God. But one TikTok Nun, Sister Mary Blaze, has become my most recent source of joy.

She has become a real standout on NunTok with her many videos featuring Beyoncé and Lady Gaga songs and featuring her, well, serving. Just take a look for yourself.

I’m not entirely sure if Sister Mary Blaze is a real nun or not but who am I to say who is and isn’t a nun? On her Facebook page, Sister Mary Blaze describes herself as “a devout follower of God [whose] main mission is to demystify the misconceptions of marijuana usage”. Ah yes, now the name makes sense. Her TikToks don’t actually show or promote any marijuana usage — probably because of the strict guidelines on the app — but she does promote being fierce, strutting down catwalks, and shade.

As someone who grew up gay in the Catholic system, Sister Mary Blaze is somewhat healing of the trauma I’ve endured. It’s nice to see religion served up so fabulously. I just wish all the figureheads of the Church were as slay the house down boots like Sister Mary Blaze. I’m not the only person who is loving the content. Her comment section is filled with people saying things like “Not Sister Slay from the Haus of GAWD” and “Another pray, another slay”.

I think my love for Sister Mary Blaze’s TikTok videos comes from the fact that I feel seen by them. Being a little gay child dancing to Beyoncé and Lady Gaga was obviously at odds with what was being preached to me at the time but now it’s nice to see a nun doing the exact same thing.

It should go without saying that Sister Mary Blaze’s TikToks don’t make up for how troubling the Catholic Church can be for many queer people. When I first watched Sister Mary Blaze’s TikTok I was a little concerned it was an attempt by someone from the Church trying to mock queer people. But when asked about her stance on the LGBTIQ community, Sister Mary said, “I live for the LGBTQIA+, it doesn’t matter who you love or what you love, is [sic] that you love.”

If you’re wondering what else goes on in NunTok, there’s another popular account called Daughters of St Paul who are commonly known as the #medianuns. They are very much real nuns and their content is resonating with people

Although I’m very unsure how I, an atheist, ended up on NunTok, I’m enjoying my time there. And that should continue as long as Sister Mary Blaze keeps acting like she’s auditioning for Sister Act 4.
