Please Enjoy This Video Of Nirvana Fans Unknowingly Sledging ‘In Utero’ To Kurt Cobain’s Face
"I think if I was stoned when I listened to it I would understand."
Nirvana are one of the most universally beloved bands in history, a trio of gamechangers that forever altered rock and pop culture at large. But that’s not to say that everyone digs them.
After all, just try blasting In Utero through your speakers at 2am on a Sunday night and you’ll be sure to find out that your neighbours aren’t wholly on board the Nirvana train. And nor, apparently, were some rock-heads when that record first came out.
Despite being the band’s greatest achievement — do not @ me — In Utero marked a turning point for the group, jettisoning the clean choruses of their past and embracing ugliness and mess. It was ahead of its time. So much so, in fact, that MTV could film a whole segment about people pissing on the work.
Yep, shortly after the album’s release, MTV reporters filmed college students reacting to the record. And then, even better, they played that “critical feedback” to the band themselves.
The clip starts great, particularly when a couple of college students who have never even heard of the band get grilled — “I only listen to club music,” one girl shyly admits. But things ramp up even more when Kurt Cobain gets to review the feedback.
“A lot of the lyrics I thought were just thrown in,” one member of the public says, while Cobain watches on through a TV screen, giggling. “I think if I was stoned when I listened to it I would [understand.]”
The whole clip is well worth your time, not just as a reminder that even the most popular music can fall on deaf ears, but also that Cobain might have been the most humble, loveable rock icon we ever had.
Enjoy:
