No Australian city produces as many cooked individuals as the City of Newcastle. There’s something about the seaside NSW metropolis that imbues its citizens with a unique type of recklessness, a refusal to abide by normal societal laws and a deep-seated distrust of any type of pants that aren’t stubbies.

They are all God’s children and we love and respect every single one of them, but perhaps none more than the latest Hero of Newcastle, this bloke that tried to tow a 17-foot motorboat down a highway with a mobility scooter.

Just take a look at him, will you? The lack of a helmet or shoes. The casual durrie in one hand. The thick black sunglasses and simple, possibly Lowes branded outfit.

This is the epitome of a man who woke up one morning with the need, but not the means to transport a boat and simply said: “Fuck it, I’ll do it my way”.

Only in Belmont will you see a man towing a boat with a mobility scooter with a durrie in one hand

The legend of DIY was spotted hooning down the Pacific Highway in Belmont near Newy last month before cops rightfully pulled him over. He was charged yesterday with multiple offences including driving whilst disqualified (of course he was), using an unregistered vehicle on road and using an unregistered trailer.

He’ll front court in January, which conveniently is when Australian of the Year is announced. I know where my vote is going.
