New Zealand Police have just published a viral video titled ‘NZ Police’s Most Entertaining Police Recruitment Video Yet’, and yeah, it lives up to its name. The clip features three minutes of surprisingly good stunts, lots of running, and cop goofs. Since being posted to the NZ Police Recruitment page on Facebook, it’s been viewed over 1.5 million times, and shared all around the world.

Other police departments have even tried piggy-backing on their counterparts success, with comments like “we’re hiring too”. Make your own video, San Diego!

The clip is packed with a wonderfully diverse cast of actual cops, with over 70 getting involved in the filming, including the actual Police Commissioner, Mike Bush. The Armed Offenders Squad, dive and dog squads and a police helicopter all make appearances too. While there are some decent stunts and some cool police stuff like doors being kicked down, the video focuses on the idea of police helping people.

“When you join the police, you’ll be trained with skills to keep you and others safe,” says a photogenic policeman, while running extremely fast like on a TV show.

But the real strength of the video lies in its wacky and offbeat brand of humour, which features among a range of gags a “police cat”, a pipe band and a cool dancing guy. The highlight is probably the woman dragging a tyre behind her.

“So what’s holding YOU back?” asks the policeman, in the tradition of recruitment videos everywhere.

“Oh, it’s just a tyre tied to my waist with a bit of rope,” she answers. Literal comedy always works.

Initial signs show that their big video stunt has worked, with the New Zealand Police Media Centre reporting that there had been an 800 percent increase in traffic to the ‘New Cops’ website since the launch of the video, with over 333 recruitment profiles created by people interesting in joining them. This is probably a relief for them, considering the last time their department was noticed on the internet, was after an extremely insensitive tweet from their social media guys.
