After just one episode in the past three years, the latest season of Sherlock is almost upon us. The hit BBC series that made a star out of Benedict Cumberbatch is set to return on New Year’s Day – and if the latest trailer is anything to go by, the world famous detective is not in a great place.

The new 40-second teaser features a clammy, bestubbled Sherlock looking all out of sorts, while also giving us a glimpse of actor Toby Jones as the series’ new villain Culverton Smith. “What’s the very worst thing you can do to your very best friends?” he asks, in as menacing a tone of voice as someone named Culverton can muster. “Tell them your darkest secret.”

The teaser ends with Sherlock staring down the barrel of the camera and declaring “I love you.” But what he’s really saying is “I’m definitely too famous for this show now.”
