All The Upcoming Star Wars Movies And TV Shows To Get Excited About
From 'The Mandalorian' season 2 to a new trilogy by Rian Johnson.
After more than 40 years and 9 movies (plus specials, TV shows and spin-offs), the Skywalker saga is over. But because it’s 2020 and Disney now owns Star Wars, the franchise is definitely not going anywhere. In fact, it’s more alive than ever.
While we’re not getting any new Star Wars movie this year (for the first time since 2015), there are a bunch of projects in the works to get excited about if you’re a fan.
Here are all the details we know so far…
The Mandalorian Season 2
Good news, Baby Yoda stans!
The second season of the Disney+ show The Mandalorian is currently in production, and is due for release in late 2020. Season 2 will apparently focus on one of the biggest unanswered mysteries in the Star Wars universe: the home planet of the Yoda species.
There’s also rumours that Skywalker saga characters will appear in The Mandalorian. But most importantly: BABY YODA!
The Obi-Wan Kenobi Series
Ewan McGregor (and hopefully his beard) will be returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for a series on Disney+.
It will apparently be set eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, and McGregor has hinted it will likely explore an Obi-Wan who is still very much affected by the trauma of Anakin Skywalker’s betrayal and the slaughter of the Jedi.
We don’t have a release date for the show yet, but it makes sense that it will drop some time in 2021.
The Rogue One Series
A prequel to Rogue One is set to come to Disney+ sometime in the next few years (many fans are predicting 2021). The show will focus on Diego Luna’s character Cassian Andor, a spy for the Rebel Alliance.
“We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this exciting new format will give us the chance to explore the character more deeply,” Luna has said about the show. According to Disney, the series will be a “rousing spy thriller” that will “explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions”.
The popular droid K-2SO will also appear in the show.
The Next Star Wars Movie Trilogy
Here’s what we have for the next Star Wars trilogy: release dates. Here’s what we don’t have: just about everything else.
These movies are set for release in December 2022, December 2024 and December 2026. But who knows if they will go ahead, because there are currently no names attached to actually create the trilogy.
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss originally were — you know, it’s the whole reason (ALLEGEDLY) they rushed to end their blockbuster show — but they’ve already jumped ship to focus on their massive Netflix deal. Anyone who watched the last season of Game of Thrones isn’t particularly sad to see them go.
Meanwhile we all anxiously await news of who will replace them.
The Kevin Feige Movie
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has done incredible things for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so Disney have brought him over to sibling franchise Star Wars to produce a movie.
We don’t know much more about what he’s cooking up at this stage — all Feige has said is, “I love that world and I love the notion of exploring new people and new places in that universe”. Although, with rumours that Taika Waititi is in talks to direct a Star Wars movie, it would make sense if this were the one.
The Rian Johnson Trilogy
Despite all the crybabies tearing apart Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi, he is still keen to come back for more Star Wars. Which is a great thing, because it’s a fact that The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars movie released this century (if you disagree you’re wrong, sorry).
Johnson has said his trilogy will involve “One story over three movies. Go new places, meet new folks, come up with a new story to tell in the Star Wars universe.” Super clear and specific!
Whatever he comes up with, it’s sure to be fantastic.
We’ll continue updating this article with more details as we get them!
