2020 was a shitty year for us Marvel nerds.

With Black Widow being delayed and a serious lack of Marvel content for the past 16 months (New Mutants doesn’t even count as a movie), a lot of fans, myself included, lost a bit of that excitement and hype that surrounds new MCU releases.

But that all changed earlier today, when a bunch of executives and investors got together in a room at Disney’s Investor Day 2020. Spoiler alert: There’s a lot of late nights of binge-watching coming up.

The mouse house announced a huge number of new projects coming up in the next few years, from Star Wars shows to Pixar movies, a new line of Alien films, and four more seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. We’re also finally getting a new sub-section for 18+ rated movies on Disney+.

But you’re here for Marvel content! So, let’s recap all the exciting news that was revealed today:

Stuff We Already Knew About But Finally Have More Details On

Ant-Man 3

Scott Lang and Hope van Dyne have been slated to return in a third Ant-Man movie for a while, but now the name of the film finally been released — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

At this point it really does seem like Marvel likes to put the word Quantum on absolutely anything, but sure. Set to return are Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer, with Kathryn Newton joining the cast as Scott’s daughter, Cassie.

Also joining the cast is Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror, a time-travelling villain who manipulates human history for his own means. And with the timeline in shambles after Endgame, this is the perfect time for him to step in.

While not much is known about the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, we do now know that Brie Larson is returning, alongside new additions Ms. Marvel (more on her later) and a grown up Monica Rambeau, who we met as a child in the first Captain Marvel. Monica Rambeau is also set to make an appearance in 2021’s WandaVision!

Captain Marvel 2 is set to release in theatres on November 11, 2022.

Christian Bale is in it as Gorr the God Butcher now. Also, it’s confirmed for May 6, 2022. Need I say more?

In other news, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has just wrapped filming at Fox Studios here in Sydney and is expected to release on July 9th next year. Marvel has also confirmed that they will not be recasting T’Challa in Black Panther 2 out of respect for Chadwick Boseman, and will instead pass on the mantle and focus on other characters under the name ‘World of Wakanda’ — the release date for which was pushed back to July 8th, 2022.

There was also more information and new trailers about previously announced MCU Disney+ shows:

  • The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is set to release in March next year, with a new trailer coming out today.
  • The Loki series is set to come out in May with a new and exclusive clip also debuting today. Also, Owen Wilson is in it. Woaw.
  • What If…? was given a release window of winter next year, also with a first look.
  • Jeremy Renner is confirmed to return as the titular character in the upcoming show Hawkeye, with Hailee Steinfeld (queen!) set to join him as Kate Bishop, a talented archer from the comics, and, even better, there’s a dog. (A DOG!) Although, this was already seen in leaked set photos, so…
  • She-Hulk also got some new deets, with Tatiana Maslany set to take up the mantle, Tim Roth returning as the Abomination and Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as The Hulk.
  • Iman Vellani was announced as Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan, a Muslim Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey who has the power to grow or shrink any part of herself. She was only introduced into the comics in 2013, but has since starred in this year’s Marvel Avengers game, and now has her own confirmed series. The superhero diversity movement that started with Black Panther and Into The Spider-Verse is still alive and well, and it’s awesome to see huge studios cast POC in their respective roles with the world of superhero movies expanding in a totally natural way. Good job, Disney.
  • WandaVision also got a new trailer. So, that’s cool, I guess! I honestly still have no idea what this show is about.

New Things You’ll Really Want To Have Disney+ For

Now for the really exciting part: A lot of new stuff was announced today, including some things that nobody could have dreamed of.

The Fantastic Four

We know absolutely nothing about this yet, but overlord of the MCU, Kevin Feige, has finally announced a reboot of Marvel’s First Family, with Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, set to direct. Get keen.

Secret Invasion

Credit: Disney

Following on from the events of the first Captain Marvel, Nick Fury and Talos the Skull (played by Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, respectively), are returning to stop a, well, secret invasion by the Skulls in Secret Invasion, based on the comic run of the same name.

Many have also speculated that this links to wherever Nick Fury was in the end credits scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home, so watch this space. (S.W.O.R.D, anyone?)

Moon Knight

Rumoured to be played by Oscar Isaac from Star Wars, Marc Spector (or Moon Knight) is a “complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder.” Basically, he has moon powers and fights crime. Should be fun!

Ironheart

While some were hoping for Iron Man 3’s Harley Keener to take up the mantle of Iron Lad, it looks like 15-year-old Riri Williams’ Ironheart is set to replace Tony Stark’s charismatic metal shoes in the MCU. Who knows, maybe Shuri’s teenage genius will have finally met its match?

Armor Wars

This announcement completely blindsided everyone, but does sound pretty cool. Don Cheadle is returning as James Rhodes, or War Machine, to fly around and protect the world from Tony Stark’s tech falling into the wrong hands.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Not much is known about this film, except for the fact that it will release before the third official GOTG sequel in 2022. The holiday special will be directed by James Gunn (YAY), probably have all the Guardians you know and love in it, and be a Disney+ original, so won’t be showing in cinemas. Christmas truly has come early.

I Am Groot

Finally, starring everyone’s favourite small Disney creature (after Baby Yoda) Baby Groot, I Am Groot will be an animated series following the sapling around in different adventures.

And that’s all the MCU content that was announced! There’s a LOT to look forward to, and that isn’t even including all the content previously announced or on the slate for the next few years and phases in the Marvel universe. But I, for one, can’t wait to see what direction they go in.
