The Winter months are officially here, thank God.

Yep, finally you have an ironclad excuse to stay in, draw the curtains, turn up the radiator and binge your way through hundreds of hours of content. So you know the drill: ignore your phone, tell your most annoying, persistent friends that you’ve died in a terrible accident, and take solace in the infinite entertainment blessed to us by the age of peak television in which we live.

And what an age it is! June is absolutely bursting with a shedload of content across a range of styles and genres. “Something for everyone” isn’t just a tired old cliche anymore — it’s the modus operandi of most streaming services.

To that end, feast your eyes upon our foolproof guide to everything hitting Netflix, Stan, Amazon Prime Video, Foxtel and SBS On Demand this June.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3

The Handmaid’s Tale isn’t, as you probably know by now, escapist television. A grim mirror held up to our times, it depicts a world not so far from our own — one where men control women’s bodies, abortion is a crime, and motherhood is fetishized to the point of commodification.

By all accounts, season three is only doubling down on that grim prescience; after the difficult decision she made in the climax of season two, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) will now have to face horrors of a different sort, all while struggling her way back to the daughter that she loves. It’s modern television at its most horrifying — and its most vital.

Dark Season Two

When the first season of German-language horror web series Dark dropped back in 2017, it was flooded with comparisons to Stranger Things. And sure, that makes a little sense — both focus on pre-pubescents coming into contact with great and powerful forces they cannot understand, and both have a deep reverence for sci-fi and thrillers from the ’80s.

But to be honest, such comparisons are fairly superficial. Underneath its outer shell, Dark is a much stranger, denser, and more beautiful beast — a mature fairy tale, one that makes a practice out of doing the thing you’d never expect it to do at almost every single point. If you haven’t seen the first season yet, consider this your official nudge to do so — you won’t regret it.

Detroiters

Recently, on Twitter, there was a suggestion that someone should create a support group for the girlfriends of those who have had their entire personalities replaced by their love for I Think You Should Leave, a new sketch comedy series from Tim Robinson that debuted on Netflix.

If you are in fact such a person, and cannot go literally a minute without splurting one of Robinson’s catchphrases (“You have no… good… car… ideas!”) then why not catch up on the comedian’s first foray into television, Detroiters? Featuring many of I Think You Should Leave‘s faces, it’s a hilarious and irreverent single camera sitcom, that combines laser-honed cringe humour with the brand of absurdism that has made Robinson something of a star.

Big Little Lies Season Two

Question: how do you top the perfectly contained first season of a show that has become a cultural sensation? Answer: by hiring Meryl Streep.

Yep, Big Little Lies is back, somehow, despite wrapping itself up into a nice neat little package at the end of its first season. All of the old familiar faces are set to return, but this time Streep is entering the mix, adding a lacquer of classic prestige to a show that already teetered between the kitsch and the old-fashioned.

Nos482

Nos482, a vampire novel by Joe Hill (the son of horror master Stephen King) is extraordinarily silly. Set in part in a mystical world known as Christmasland (no, seriously), it’s the story of an immortal evil, a young girl, and an abandoned bridge that can travel backwards through time.

Now, the novel has been adapted into a TV series that, thankfully, looks just as soupy and wild as the source that inspired it. Starring Zachary Quinto as Charles Manx, an ancient vampire, and a whole bunch of young newcomers just lined up to get horribly murdered, it’s exactly the kind of over-the-top madness that the Winter months need.
