It’s April Fool’s Day, the day where liars and jerks tell you false things and then laugh at you when you believe them. I hate this day, the day of the bad japes and the foul mocking. I hate it with all of my withered heart.

This is the fate all April Fool’s jokers deserve.

Leading the charge for this year’s worst April Fool’s joke is the Republic of Nauru, best known as the place we send asylum seekers when we want them to go away and possibly die. The Republic’s official Twitter account, which is notorious for getting into arguments with journalists and critics of its detention centre, posted a light-hearted April Fool’s tweet about the island bidding for the Olympics.

It’s doubly funny because people actually on Nauru won’t be able to see the joke. Why? Because of a government-imposed ban on websites like Facebook and Twitter that prevents asylum seekers from contacting their families and legal representatives! Hilarious.

Inexplicably, the response has been less than enthusiastic. tweets2

Understandably, whoever runs the Republic’s Twitter is quite upset that people aren’t laughing at their funny joke. Come on guys, lighten up. Why can’t you have a sense of humour like the island prison where hundreds of people live lives of neverending misery at the behest of the Australian government? Geez.

Solid burn, guys. You sure showed the haters what’s what. Keep on truckin’.
