Casual job interviews are bittersweet. On the one hand, the prospect of employment (and money!) is so exciting, and frankly, such a relief when you’ve been on the job hunt for ages. But on the other hand, the dreaded casual “coffee” interview is so intimidating that it may deter you altogether.

Not only are you meeting someone influential, but you need to try and be charming, chill and confident while also super professional. It’s a fine line to balance.

But connections are important, and you never know what a quick meeting will turn into – so we think you should just go for it. With these handy tips, you’ll be acing that schmooze-session and getting the job of your dreams.

#1 Be Friendly

It may sound really simple, but smiling and being friendly is such a sure-fire way to set yourself apart from other applicants in the interview process. It not only shows that you’re approachable, but it indicates how adaptable you are in high-pressure or stressful situations (like interviews, for example).

Smiling can also alleviate any anxiety or nerves surrounding an interview situation, and can help you exude confidence and self-assuredness.

#2 Ask The Right Questions

Instead of nodding your head profusely and murmuring “yes” and “absolutely” while an interviewer is talking, be sure to actively listen to everything they say. Making these mental notes of what they’re looking for in the position will prove invaluable when it comes to question time at the end of the interview.

Asking the right questions (which relate to the interview content and extend on information already given) will show your dedication to learning and listening at the new job, and will highlight your ability to communicate with others effectively.

#3 Be Available

This job isn’t that cute guy you want to chase you for a date. This job is a privilege and needs to be treated that way. Clearing your schedule to a manageable degree (AKA where you aren’t overworked or super stressed) is a huge tick in an employers’ eyes, who want you to work when you’re needed. Plus, by being available you’ll be open to more shifts, and more shifts = more sweet, sweet money — it’s a win-win really!

#4 Show Yourself Off

This may just be a “casual” get to know you session, but be sure to sell yourself and make sure they know you’re awesome. Make the interviewer aware of all of your best qualities, particularly qualities that match the job’s requirements. For example, good communication skills are a huge requirement at most casual jobs that involve service/interacting with customers, so demonstrate this through your interview through good gesturing, eye contact and appropriate language.

Also, it’s a great idea to feature your previous job experiences to help you land your next gig, as it shows both your willingness to work and your skills in a certain field — making you a very valuable future employee!

Happy job hunting!
