Muriel’s Wedding Is Being Turned Into A Stage Musical
Expect plenty of ABBA tracks.
The girl from Porpoise Spit is heading to the big city once again. The Sydney Theatre Company has announced over night that it will produce a full-blown musical version of Muriel’s Wedding, to hit the stage in 2017. Expect there to be ABBA. Lots and lots of ABBA.
Early reports suggest the adaptation will stick closely to the original, albeit with a few modern twists. “Following her dreams to Sydney, Muriel ends up with everything she ever wanted – a man, a fortune and a million Twitter followers,” reads a synopsis on the STC website. “That’s when things start to go really wrong.”
The show will have a book by PJ Hogan, who wrote and directed the 1994 film. Simon Phillips will direct, while Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall will provide original music and lyrics to pad out a soundtrack of Swedish pop hits.

The news comes on the back of a number of successful Australian film-to-stage adaptations over the last few years, including Strictly Ballroom and Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. Last week it was also revealed that Moulin Rouge! would be making its way to the stage in the hands of director Alex Timbers and Tony-winning writer John Logan.
