Movies are too complicated these days. Superhero films require a list of pre-viewing the length of your arm. Every franchise is trying to build an entire miniature universe, with characters steeped in lore like a teabag left in a mug for too long. Which is why I am so delighted by the first teaser for Moonfall, a movie about the moon… falling.

Wanna know the plot? Here goes: the moon is falling! A bunch of people, including Halle Berry, have to stop the moon from falling! The falling of the moon results in flash flooding and mass chaos! Watch out for that moon! It’s falling!

This is Snakes on a Plane level simplicity, a return to the bygone days of movie-watching in which all that was needed to sell the next blockbuster was imagery of recognisable structures being blown to smithereens.

Indeed, Moonfall is directed by the man who pioneered the, “hey, know the White House? Here’s what it looks exploded!” trend of American cinema, Roland Emmerich. It represents a long-awaited return to form from the filmmaker behind Independence Day and Godzilla, an opportunity for old Roland to totally submerge himself in shrapnel and huge hunks of burning shit once more.

And hey, I haven’t even told you the tagline yet, which is, simply, “In 1969, we went to the moon. In 2022, the moon will come to us.”

Perfection.
