Well, the first trailer for the forthcoming Marvel TV series Moon Knight is finally upon us and I guess my only question is: what the hell is Oscar Isaac doing?

Don’t get me wrong. Oscar Isaac is one of the most important and emotionally diverse actors currently working. Leave aside the fact that he is a bona fide hottie, the man has an astonishing range — one need only check out his career-defining performance in Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter for proof of that. He can transmit entire worlds in a mere sideways glance, embodying a kind of fragile, beautiful humanity that seems perpetually on the verge of disappearing completely. Blink and you’ll miss what makes Isaac special.

And hell, the man has already proven that he is singularly skilled at making big-budget, high-profile Hollywood projects work for him. He doesn’t just dissolve into the background when surrounded by special effects and high production values, as so many other actors do. He has Nicolas Cage’s ability to chew the scenery, even as the scenery threatens to swamp him — who else could have made The Rise of Skywalker, one of the worst blockbusters in recent memory, so consistently watchable every time he is onscreen?

Indeed, it’s presumably that insatiable desire to make the mainstream just a little bit weirder that explains his astonishing accent choice in the Moon Knight series. We’re talking Dick Van Dyke levels of extremity here: he’s chewing his lines like they’re marbles, fumbling in the most delightful way through what any other actor would have approached as just one more meat and potatoes job.

Better yet, the series around him seems similarly bizarre. Anyone who is familiar with the Moon Knight comics will know that the property is one of the strangest in the Marvel vault, a story of split personalities, demons, and strange, waking nightmares.

Basically, it looks like we are in for something singular here. And thank goodness for that.
