Montaigne’s song ‘Don’t Break Me’ beat out 9 other hopefuls in SBS’s ‘Australia Decides’ final to book her ticket to the Netherlands.

Ten contestants took the stage to perform their entries, judged by both a jury and by a televote from viewers around Australia. Montaigne’s song ‘Don’t Break Me’ was the favourite with the jury, topping it with 54 votes, adding 53 votes from the public to win the night with 107 points. Casey Donovan came in second with 100 points, and Vanessa Amarosi came in third on 82.

Last night’s competition was held on the Gold Coast, Australia’s Europe. It was hosted by Joel Creasey and Myf Warhurst, who will also host Australia’s Eurovision coverage later this year.

Montaigne has explained her art-pop tune ‘Don’t Break Me’ is about a specific part of a breakup.

“‘Don’t Break Me’ is a depiction of the enough is enough phase of a relationship breakdown, where one person feels like they are putting much more time, energy and resources into the relationship than the other person and becomes frustrated and resentful. I wrote it while reading ‘Codependent No More’ by Melody Beattie, which really informed the qualities of the character and the relationship dynamic.”

There was a lot of chatter online about Montaigne’s look in the performance, with many commenting on her ‘clown’ look.

That was until Montaigne revealed that she was also paying tribute to the Pokemon character Mr Mime.

After her performance, Montaigne sent a message to everyone thanking them for the support. In an extremely relatable move, while clutching the Eurovision trophy she was given, she said “Can’t wait to put this on top of my piano and um…claim dominance in my sharehouse.” Heck yeah, someone else can do the dishes for a bit.

Montaigne is multi-talented, and at one point she was a semi-professional soccer player. I personally think she should bring some of the below to the Eurovision stage. Europeans love soccer, it’s a surefire win!

You can check out her entire singing performance from last night below, and you can see her perform in May in the first Eurovision semi-final.
