"I don’t care if you call it 'La Casa de Papel' or 'Money Heist'. If you love these thieves and despise Arturo, we’re best friends."

Over the weekend, Netflix finally dropped the first five episodes of Money Heist’s much-anticipated fifth and final season.

— Warning: Spoilers for Season 5, Part 1 ahead. —

If you didn’t wipe your memory clean to help cope with the pain, you might remember that Season 4 of the Spanish crime drama featured Nairobi’s heartwrenching death as a result of the gang deciding to target the Bank of Spain for their next heist.

But if one devasting loss wasn’t enough for viewers, Season 5 decided to rip our hearts out all over again. In the final episode of Season 5 Part 1, we saw one of the saddest deaths yet with Tokyo’s untimely demise.

While other major things did happen over Part 1 of the final season — like Sierra deciding to work with the Professor after he helped deliver her baby, Helsinki getting trapped under a marble pillar, and Stockholm killing Arturo and then bringing him back to life  — no plot point was bigger, or more painful, than Tokyo’s death.

After Tokyo, Denver, and Manila worked together to distract the army so that the rest of the gang could focus on freeing Helsinki from the pillar crushing him, Tokyo was non-fatally shot by snipers five times.

But with Rio unable to make a hole big enough for Tokyo to escape, and with Tokyo knowing that she was far too injured to join Denver and Manila on the dumbwaiter that pulled them down to safety, she selflessly sacrificed herself to fight off Sagasta’s squad to buy some time.

Aware that her fate was basically sealed, Tokyo bid farewell to her lover Rio through the small hole he created and said goodbye to The Professor over the radio. Then, as the remaining military squad stormed the kitchen and Gandía stood over Tokyo ready to take her out, she detonated four grenades to kill off everyone in the room — including Sagasta’s team and big, bad Gandía himself.

But while we may have seen Arturo die and then be brought back to life, the same fate is unlikely for Tokyo. Unless, of course, she was somehow able to survive not only her multiple gunshot wounds but the active grenades strapped to her chest, too. So sadly, this really does look like this is the end for our beloved Tokyo, who will at least finally be reunited with Nairobi and Berlin again. As for the rest of the gang, and the question of who will become the new series narrator in a post-Tokyo world, we’re just going to have to wait until December 3 for Part 2 to see what the future holds.

In the meantime, here are all the best memes about Part 1 of Money Heist Season 5 to help you laugh away the pain:
