Miss Kaninna Sucks: “Money Comes And Money Goes”
I’ve accepted that I’ll never be as cool as Miss Kaninna — and that’s okay. She’s released two singles in 2023, May’s ‘Blak Britney’ and now ‘Pinnacle Bitch’, and both paint a picture of an artist that’s confident, charismatic and just a touch chaotic. Put it this way: some people throw cold water on their face to wake themselves up in the morning. If you ask me, blasting a Miss Kaninna track before you leave the house puts that wake-up call to shame.
‘Pinnacle Bitch’ opens with the blistering lyrics, “Let me get one thing fucking straight/I run this game/You can’t play/You turn up too late”. From there, Miss Kaninna reminds listeners that she’s “THAT bitch”, and it’s hard to argue otherwise. The track’s acid house-esque bassline is hypnotic, while Miss Kaninna’s vocals demand your full attention. Produced by Finn Rees, and featuring additional production from Jacob Farah, the best way to play ‘Pinnacle Bitch’ is on speaker systems that make the ground shake when they’re turned all the way up. It’s not a track you can have playing in the background.
To mark the release of ‘Pinnacle Bitch’, Junkee spoke to Miss Kaninna about being addicted to fizzy drinks, rushing out the door when you’ve got to be somewhere, and re-evaluating her relationship with procrastination.
Cringe quote you used to live by?
I still live by this. “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.”
Worst advice you got and blindly followed?
That I should straighten my hair cause I look prettier like that. Little did I know that was just black hate crime.
The worst failure you’re up for sharing, and what you learned from it?
Dating a white boy. I learnt to never let a white man colonise my body again. Period.
Anything you used to be wrong about?
I might not always be right but I’m never, ever wrong.
Embarrassing internet habit?
There is no way I’m giving that information up for free… pay me and I’ll think about it! ;)
Ideal morning routine versus actual morning routine?
Ideally, I would wake up with plenty of time and have a relaxing start, cup of tea, read a little, maybe a little diary entry. But that just ain’t me, I wish it was but I’m the kinda girl that wakes up 15 mins before I need to be somewhere and the whole thing is a rush.
Something very off-brand for you?
I’m addicted to fizzy drinks. Like I’m talking sarsaparilla, Coke, and root beer. Creaming soda is my fave at the moment, anything cherry-flavoured. And now I live in Naarm, and the options are crazy.
What do you waste money on?
I’m a working class citizen, I don’t waste money on nothing I don’t deserve. Money comes and money goes.
Worst procrastination habit?
I’ll clean the fuck out of my room and then the house, then my car, rather than look at my emails or do any kind of work that requires me to gather information. I used to really procrastinate but the more I think about it, the more I realise organisation is just a colonial concept. So really, being organised is a white thing. I run on Black time ;).
