A Melbourne Landlord Is Renting Out Dystopian Sleeping Pods For $250 Per Week
The pods are not much cheaper than a one-bedroom apartment in the suburb.
If you needed another reminder that the housing market is well and truly cooked, you can now rent out a single bed-sized pod in Abbotsford for the measly price of $900 per month.
A rental listing in the Melbourne suburb of Abbotsford is now offering $250/week pod living, or you can pay $400 per week for a traditional bedroom.
As for what that $250 per week will get you, it includes a “single bed equipped with own mirror, ventilating fan, USB ports, digital control panels, adjustable colour reading lights, safe locker, clothes hanger and curtain door for privacy,” according to the listing.
All six pods are contained within one bedroom of a five-bedroom house that otherwise seems to function as a bigger-than-average family home. You know, except for the fact that you’d be living with a minimum of nine other people in a hostel-style arrangement. In total, the property maxes out at 12 occupants — which sounds like absolute hell when you consider there are only four bathrooms, two of which are ensuites.
“The eight-bed, four-bath house can host a maximum of 12 occupants only, no overcrowding allowed,” the listing reads.

The property reportedly has all of the necessary permits to function as a boarding house, according to the listing.
“The boarding house and the capsules are fully licensed. We work with building surveyors, property lawyers, council, health department, consumer affairs and BBOA to ensure the house is fully compliant with Australian building code and fire safety regulation,” the listing reads.
The question that remains unclear is why anyone would pay $250/week for a capsule, when other listings in the suburb include a studio apartment for $281/week, or a one bedroom bathroom with a car space for just $310/week. Not to mention, the abundance of share house options available that do not require you to live with 11 other people.
