Meet The 91-Year-Old Nonna Who Might Be The World’s Greatest Marijuana Chef
Let's take this chicken cacciatore up a notch.
Well, if it wasn’t enough to see those three grandmas smoking pot for the first time a couple of weeks back, now VICE’s dedicated weed channel, Munchies, brings us the talents of 91-year-old Aurora Leveroni, who could well be the world’s most accomplished marijuana chef. She’s the star of the very first episode of Bong Appetit, a show that pretty much does what it says on the tin.
“No sticks, no stones will break my bones. But don’t fool around with my marijuana. I can assure you that if you do, sticks and stones will break your bones,” says the sweet-looking nonagenarian at the beginning of the video. Then everybody laughs, but I swear I can hear the lightest tinge of fear in their voices.
Aurora turned to weed cuisine after her daughter started experiencing severe seizures following an accident five years ago. Using her “75 years of experience in the kitchen”, Aurora began working out how to best extract the inherent flavours and medicinal properties of marijuana without, uh, overdoing it on the recreational aspect. She is also, as the video makes clear, a sassy-as-hell, take-no-prisoners 91-year-old with a quick wit and some serious cooking chops.
But perhaps the best part of it all is how much the whole thing feels like the sort of cooking show you might discover on the Lifestyle Channel at 10 pm on a Friday night. Light breezy music, simple instructions and a whole bunch of genteel people guiding you through their kitchen. A kitchen which just happens to be absolutely covered in weed.
The video comes with a recipe for Aurora’s signature dish, Chicken Pot-cciatore, a dish which is so goddamn illegal in Australia we probably shouldn’t even be linking to it. However with even Tony Abbott saying he’s in favour of medical marijuana, perhaps it won’t be long until our own nonnas can start getting in on the action.
