Watch Malcolm Turnbull Sink Beers And Try To Be Funny In An Interview With The Betoota Advocate
It was...very good for a first try.
Turnbull has reminded the nation why Australian politicians should never try to be funny, in a sit down interview with satirical newspaper The Betoota Advocate.
In a 20 minute chat broadcast live via Facebook from the Old Fitzroy pub in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, the Prime Minister knocked back a beer with the editors of Australia’s oldest newspaper [citation needed], while doing his absolute best to seem relatable. You know, to the kids.
Asked by Clancy Overell whether former PM Tony Abbott was like rugby league player Robbie Farah, in that he was “a great clubman” who “can’t get on with whoever’s in charge,” Turnbull laughed and replied “no, you can’t tempt me into that area.”
On the subject of state politics, the Prime Minister said he was unconcerned about the possibility of Russia hacking the WA election. As it turns out, the Liberals might have been better off if the Russians had. He also insisted that Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce is “very, very good at computing,” so there you go.
Other highlights included a strained metaphor about how politics is like kayaking, and a recital of Banjo Paterson’s ‘A Bush Christening’. Nice one Malc, youth voters love a bit of Banjo.
The interview ended with Overell inviting the PM out onto the balcony for a dart, as you do.
