Steven Avery Of ‘Making A Murderer’ Just Won His Appeal, So Get Ready For Season Three, Probably
A new trial for Avery could be on the horizon.
When its first season launched a little over three years ago, Making A Murderer established Netflix as a global entertainment power-player, kicked off a whole wave of true crime infotainment, and made it abundantly clear that the law moves with all the speed of a horde of octogenarians heading for the exit when Bingo ends.
Indeed, in the three years since we were first introduced to Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey, both of them accused of having a hand in the murder of Teresa Halbach, the Making A Murderer case has been a mess of slow-moving appeals, overturned rulings, and the promise of new court cases.
Dassey, for instance, came close to being freed back in 2016, when a judge ruled that the controversial confession the man signed while in custody had been coerced by the police. A little under a year later, a second court upheld the judge’s decision — but six or so months after that, another court overturned it, and Dassey’s chances of release began to look bleak again.
So, keep all that in mind while digesting the following: news has broken that Avery has won his appeal, meaning he could have a new trial.

Emphasis on could. As Avery’s lawyer Kathleen Zellner told Newsweek, this isn’t a done deal yet. All that the ruling means is that Avery’s case will be sent back to the circuit court — a local court, with a limited jurisdiction that can be overruled if necessary.
From there, the circuit court has the power to grant the Making A Murderer star a brand new trial — which, it should be emphasised, he might not necessarily win. If they knock a new trial back, then the case can be passed on to an appellate court, which is a court that also has the power to grant a new trial.
Just finished second season of #MakingaMurderer. I mean c'mon. These guys were clearly framed and pretty obvious it was the Bobby Dassey kid who did the crime or knows who did.

Basically, this isn’t even close to being resolved yet — in the very best case scenario, there’s still at least two more to court cases to go.
But hey, it’s certainly fodder for a third season of Making A Murderer.
