‘Lovecraft Country’, The New Series From Jordan Peele, Mixes Real-World Horrors With Monsters
Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name, the series follows a young man as he makes his way through 1950s America.
Lovecraft Country, the acclaimed novel by Matt Ruff, is one of the most disturbing works of fiction in recent years — and not because of its army of otherworldly creatures.
Nope, the most shocking stuff in the book, which is set in the 1950s, is the real-world horrors, ripped straight from the pages of history.
Following a young man named Atticus Black as he travels across the country looking for his missing father, the work details the full extent of American racism. It’s a difficult work to deal with, one of those books that you will frequently find yourself taking pauses from, just to gather your thoughts.
And now, Ruff’s text has been translated into a new miniseries from Jordan Peele, he of Us and Get Out fame.
Peele’s new series, co-created with Misha Green of acclaimed series Underground, follows the same magic realist tone of the book. So amidst “spooky goings-on in the woods”, the series is also dotted with cross-burnings and violent attacks by the Ku Klax Klan.
At this stage, the release date for the series is just “August” — hopefully we get something more concrete than that. We’re also waiting to find out officially what streaming service the series will hit in this country. Given it’s an HBO project, it’s probably reasonable to expect it’ll come to Foxtel. But we’ll let you know when we get confirmation either way.
