Here Are The Most Popular ‘Like A Version’ Tracks Of 2019
triple j have done the math and worked out the most popular Like A Version tracks of 2019.
Every year, Like A Version grows stronger.
Triple J’s beloved cover song segment has only become more of a cultural institution this year, reaching fans at home and abroad and attractive a deluge of beloved international guests. Everyone from rap god Denzel Curry to emo dreamboat Yungblud have taken to the show to sing their hearts out, and the results have been predictably excellent.
Now, in the twilight of 2019, triple j have collected the stats across all their social media and YouTube pages to rank the most watched and beloved Like A Version sets of the year.
And the results will… Well, actually, they probably won’t shock you that much.
Here they are.
#10. Alex Lahey — ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’
Alex Lahey and My Chemical Romance are a match made in heaven, two acts that combine emotive and handsome songwriting with a sense of reckless chaos. Unsurprisingly then, Lahey’s cover of ‘Welcome to the Black Parade’ is a ripper. It’s so good, in fact, that it got a shot-out from Gerard Way himself. We stan.
#9. Allday and The Veronicas – ‘Big Yellow Taxi’
Joni Mitchell’s eco-critical classic ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ has only got more relevant in the recent years, which is why it proved such excellent fodder for hip hop hero Allday and pop legends The Veronicas.
#8. Hilltop Hoods – ‘Can’t Stop’
Hilltop Hoods and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are, weirdly enough, a match made in musical heaven — two acts that have combined lightness and bravado, savagery and grace. So of course the former band’s cover of ‘Can’t Stop’ is a work of weirdo, lopsided art.
#7. Aurora — ‘Across The Universe’
Aurora dominated Triple J this year, going viral with a weirdo interview conducted with the station about bookshelves and masturbation. Her cover of The Beatles’ ‘Across The Universe’ is just as good.
#6. Little Simz — ‘Feel Good Inc.’
The strangest thing about this cover of the Gorillaz’s classic ‘Feel Good Inc.’ is that you can understand every word. Real weird.
#5. Cub Sport – ‘When The Party’s Over’
Cub Sport are one of the country’s most heartfelt and sincere pop acts, which makes them a natural fit for Billie Eilish’s devastatingly beautiful ‘When The Party’s Over’. It’ll have you weeping.
#4. Childish Gambino — ‘Lost In You’
Gambino loves appearing on ‘Like A Version’ with a weirdo, obscure throwback R&B hit in tow, and his cover of Chris Gaines’ ‘Lost In You’ is no different. Sultry wonder.
#3. Jorja Smith – ‘Killing Me Softly’
‘Killing Me Softly With His Song’, a hip hop classic by pioneers The Fugees, gets a make-over with this incredible and bizarre cover from Jorja Smith. Proof that you don’t need to honour a classic by simply repeating it.
#2. Yungblud & Halsey – ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’
Two of the most accomplished practitioners of modern emo team up to take on an emo classic, Death Cab For Cutie’s ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’. Of course it’s masterful.
#1. Denzel Curry – ‘Bulls On Parade’
I mean, what else was it going to be?
