Let’s Take A Quick Look At Steven Soderbergh’s Twitter Novella

It's called Glue, and it keeps on coming.

Side Effects director Steven Soderbergh has always been on the cutting-edge of new media, as shown by his indie pioneering filmography and this weird scene from Schizopolis (1996).

True to form, he’s now published a novella on Twitter under the awesomely teenage-y handle, @Bitchuation.

So, what’s the bitchuation, guys? Well, the story’s cryptically titled Glue, and seems set amongst  the flashy canals of Amsterdam, cafes of Paris and cobblestoned alleys of Madrid. It’s a bit like a Georges Simenon mystery, if Georges Simenon had stuffed his terse novels with shaky phone photos and a general air of sadsack-y virginity. So yeah, it’s not really like Georges Simenon at all, except maybe the names of European cities.

Soderbergh’s been steadily leaking new bits over the past couple of days and has currently tweeted out a total of seven chapters, but really, who has the time? In that spirit, here’s a condensed version of the best bits, with our own confused comments.

It’s pretty endearing that he says “attempt”. Good start, Sodey.

Oh, so the protagonist is dead? Like in ‘The Lovely Bones’? Hmm, interesting…

Multimedia! I really feel he should’ve used this opportunity to include a photo of a dead battery, though. Or at least change the line to “regret was a grassy window”.

Death is a Mickey Mouse melon? The protagonist works for Disney? I’m a bit confused now. Still, nice photo.

Ah, anger. The centrepiece of all great literature. I think this bit is about James Franco.

Get off my fucking lawn!

It seems a femme fatale was introduced somewhere during the last 14 minutes of tweets. I’m not going back, though.

Excellent, this is more like it! Mention the “waiter” and include a photo of the “waiter”. A photo of an exit sign would’ve worked well, too.

Sigh, I know that smell well.

Chin up, lil’ buddy.

“BEAT” is a filmmaking instruction, not a link to that Michael Jackson song. It’s perhaps unnecessary in a novella. At this point, you might wanna go back to find out who’s potentially killing who, ’cause I have no idea.

She’s just not that into you, ya clenched-fisted maniac!

Somebody’s gonna die.

So anyway, yeah, good book, reminds me a bit of Out Of Sight, but with Matt Damon instead of George Clooney (I don’t know why). Now we’ve just gotta wait for Soderbergh to tweet out the rest so we can find out what happens to that guy and that girl and that waiter in the end. Keep track of the bitchuation at @Bitchuation.
